When you receive flowers most times it’s the thought that counts. Whether you receive a hundred or one, you’d like to keep them fresh for longer. So here are several good methods.

1. Sugar and vinegar

Dissolve 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons white vinegar per 250 ml of water. Fill the vase, make sure the cut stems are covered by 3-4 inches (7-10 centimeters) of the prepared water. The sugar nourishes the plants, while the vinegar inhibits bacterial growth.

2. Aspirin

Put a crushed aspirin in the water before adding your flowers. Change the vase water every few days.

3. Vodka and Sugar

Add a few drops of vodka/spirit to the vase water for antibacterial action along with 1 teaspoon sugar. Change the water every other day, refreshing the vodka and sugar each time.

3.Vinegar and Sugar

One way is to mix 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons sugar with the vase water before adding the flowers.  Change the water every few days to enhance your flowers’ longevity.

4. Hairspray

Stand a foot away from the bouquet and give them a quick spray, just on the undersides of the leaves and petals.

5. Store in Fridge

This is one of the best ways you can keep cut flowers fresh is to store them in the refrigerator overnight. Put your bouquet in the fridge every night before bed (typically 8 hours per night.)

Try the above methods and you won’t regret it. Keep your flowers fresh for longer.

(Ps. Don’t throw your flowers after storing. A new post is coming up on pot pourri – is a mixture of dried, naturally fragrant plant material, used to provide a gentle natural scent)

Have a lovely valentines weekend!
